Thomas Dillon (b. 1986, Staten Island, NY) is a self-taught artist based in Philadelphia, PA who came to painting only three years ago after seeing a friend’s art collection and realizing that he not only could do “that”, but that he also felt compelled to. Dillon has worked large-scale since his first painting and uses untraditional art materials to create including sticks, house paint, his hands, cardboard tubes and other objects to add energy, immediacy and movement to his works.

I work primarily with reclaimed interior and exterior house paint and consciously avoid using traditional tools to apply the paint and rely solely on my hands, found sticks, cardboard tubes, mixing stirrers and the canvas itself. I work intuitively, from what feels like a primal drive, to create sensations and visceral responses to the paintings as they unfold rather than relying on my cognitive or intellectual faculties.
