Possessing knowledge of the future sounds like impossible magic, but everyone catches glimpses of this charm in dreams and moments of déjà vu– Those rare seconds when our core-being sparks into pre-recognition of the moment unfolding before us, which has somehow already been experienced despite not consciously having been lived. These experiences are frustratingly fleeting and generally catch us completely off guard, appearing like flames to impart a stupefying view into another realm before quickly dissipating, hinting at something deeper to all of this.
Artists are especially attuned to this openness of perception, and many have an innate awareness of the fluidity of time and reality that allows them to tap into something close to divination in their creative process. They open a door and allow everyone to jump into their experiences as if they were their own. This rare gift manifests something that is privately lived and deeply ingrained in just one person, but that translates into a mirror for the spectators lives as well. It’s magic when it materializes, instantly transforming the unfamiliar life and history of a stranger into something eerily familiar.
Clairvoyance highlights 10 artists who create artworks that breed this air of familiarity and recognition despite being scenes and states of consciousness that are entirely new to us. Some of the works presented feel like premonitions, or other forms of heightened awareness or links to parallel universes, while others veer into abstraction with representations tied to the unknowable forms of energy we encounter and experience within ourselves that make something like clairvoyance feel possible.
