Already Not Yet

Already Not Yet marks the first time for British painter Ben Jamie to exhibit in the United States. With a series of new canvases blending abstraction and loose figurative narratives, Jamie conjures a realm of representation that mixes jagged color fields reminiscent of Clyfford Still with cartoon tweaks on El Greco that lean more towards Dr. Seuss. Raw flax is often left exposed and pushed to the front of a composition while dense layers of pigment sink into the background creating a slightly off-kilter effect. These paintings are playful, but still serious, explorations by a young painter who has found his footing and is now on the run.

In the back gallery, Kevin McNamee-Tweed continues with his use of unpredictable mediums, but instead of his well-known monoprints he is now working with ceramic wall hangings. Each piece is incised with line drawings using a variety of tools before being bisque fired, and then glaze-painted and fired again. Clay adds a literal new dimension to McNamee-Tweed’s new works, which feel both familiar and intimate but still manage to emanate a universality beyond their seemingly simple outlines and bleeding colors. The artist’s personal histories are interwoven with old-time cliches to create humorous and often poignant reflections of the world around us.
